Unwanted pregnancies can be very stressful for women. Whether or not women have the right to have abortions is a controversial topic. Pro-life organizations and individuals believe that abortion is seriously wrong. However, women should be able to have abortions for several reasons. Women should have the right to make decisions about their own bodies. Women should be able to have an abortion if they are too young and unable to take care their babies. And the right to have an abortion is the pregnancy negatively affects the women’s or the baby’s health.
It has been nearly 14 years that safe abortion been legalized in Nepal in 2002. This is a milestone achievement of Nepal to safeguard women’s right to body and right to self determination. Before this, one-fifth of women prisoners were convicted of illegal abortion some of them charged with murder as well. The 11th Amendment Bill of the Country Code (Mulukin Ain) was passed by the parliament liberalizing women’s access to safe abortion.
Till yesterday, an uniform fee structure created for safe abortion services had been a barrier to access safe and legal safe abortion in Nepal. Women activists and right activists were demanding a necessary provision to provide adequate compensation to women who had to undergo unwanted pregnancy due to the infringement of their right to abortion.
Indeed, some good news was announced in country Budget FY 2015/16: Abortion services at the government run health institutions will be free.
